NEET-PG Admissions: Centre Seeks Urgent Hearing In SC of EWS Quota Case

New Delhi: The Centre on Monday urged the Supreme Court (SC) to schedule a hearing in a matter related to the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) quota in connection with the NEET-PG admissions.

''There is a sense of urgency. If the court can schedule it for tomorrow,'' centre's Solicitor General, Tushar Mehta told Justice Chandrachud.

On this, Chandrachud stated that it would communicate with the Chief justice of India NV Ramana to see if a special bench could be established to hear the matter tomorrow or the next day.

Chandrachud further stated that the sole difference was that it was three-judge bench case and presently, Justice Surya Kant is sitting on a separate Bench with the Chief Justice and Justice Vikram Nath.

The matter was initially scheduled to be heard on January 6.

On December 31st, the centre in its affidavit asserted that it has chosen to keep the existing the criteria of Rs 8 lakh annual income ceiling for determining 10 percent EWS reservation for continuing admissions.

It further said that amending criteria provided by the committee will be implemented with the next admission cycle.
